Shop, eat, and explore in Maui’s quaint town of Makawao

Archaeological sites provide evidence that ancient Hawaiians once lived in this locale 1,500 feet up Haleakala. Sugar plantation workers and homesteading ranchers followed later. Paniolo still occasionally ride their horses in and tie ’em up to the hitching posts on Baldwin Avenue. Mostly, though, you’re more likely to smell gentrified air in this quaint little town.
